Pearsall's Gossamer Silk Thread is the thread to use on traditional wet flies and soft hackles but can add pizzazz to any other pattern where floss is required. Beautiful color range. 45 meters per spool.
The history of silk fly tying thread is well documented and dates back to 1496 when Dame Juliana Berners published her Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle; the first book to detail fly patterns. Fly dressers have used silk tying thread longer than any other type of thread. Renowned fly dressers have used Pearsall's Pure Silk Fly Tying Threads and Flosses for over 200 years and the literature of fly dressing teems with patterns that specifically call for Pearsall's Pure Silk Threads and Flosses.
Why silk? Many older fly patterns, for example the Royal Coachman, do not work as well as they should if synthetics are substituted in place of the silk called for in the original dressings. Pure silk and synthetics do not change color in the same manner when they become wet. Older fly patterns usually called for silk thread or silk floss; therefore, the substitution of synthetics for silk results in a fly, which when becomes wet, has little resemblance to the color of the original pattern. This can be and often is a critical problem when attempting to imitate certain natural insects that trout feed on. Silk, when wet, has better translucent and iridescent characteristics than synthetics; thus silk mimics the translucence and iridescence of natural insects much better than synthetics.
Pearsall's Pure Silk Threads and Flosses are produced from Chinese Bombyx Raw Silk. Therefore, unlike many silk threads and flosses that are manufactured from waste silk, they have fiber lengths of hundreds if not thousands of meters long. On the other hand, threads and flosses made from waste silk have fiber lengths of centimeters. Pearsall's Pure Silk Threads and Flosses are scoured to remove Sericin and dyed by hand. They are not weighted by the addition of metallic salts.
